Trains in Midwest USA — Chicago Hub, Milwaukee, Minneapolis & Beyond
Chicago Union Station is the crossroads of American rail — every major Amtrak long-distance route crossing the country passes through it. From the 90-minute hop to Milwaukee on the Hiawatha to the overnight Lake Shore Limited to New York, the Midwest offers some of the best-value and most iconic train journeys in the USA. This is your complete guide to Midwest rail travel.
🏙️ Chicago Union Station — America's Rail Crossroads
Chicago Union Station is the most important train station in the USA outside the Northeast Corridor. Unlike Washington DC or New York, which serve primarily the East Coast, Chicago is a true national hub — every Amtrak train that crosses the interior of the country passes through it. Eight major long-distance routes converge here, connecting the Midwest to every coast and corner of the country.
For short-distance travel, the Chicago corridor is exceptional. The Hiawatha to Milwaukee runs seven round trips daily — one of the highest-frequency intercity Amtrak routes in the USA. The Illinois Service to St Louis and Quincy runs multiple daily departures on state-supported equipment. The Wolverine to Detroit runs three times daily.
⚡ The Hiawatha — Chicago to Milwaukee
The Amtrak Hiawatha between Chicago Union Station and Milwaukee Intermodal Station is the best-value and most frequent intercity train service in the Midwest. With seven round trips daily — 14 individual train movements — it offers a level of service that approaches commuter rail frequency on an intercity route.
The 90-minute journey costs from $21 on Saver fare, making it genuinely competitive with driving — especially when parking costs in both cities are factored in. The train departs from the heart of Chicago's Loop and arrives at Milwaukee's downtown Intermodal Station, both within walking distance of major attractions.
The Hiawatha is jointly funded by the states of Wisconsin and Illinois, which is why it runs so much more frequently than most Amtrak routes. It is often cited as a model for what state-supported Amtrak corridor trains can achieve — and has consistently outperformed ridership projections since its expansion to seven daily round trips.
🗺️ Long Distance Trains from Chicago
Chicago is the gateway to Amtrak's most iconic long-distance routes. Every train that crosses the continental USA either starts or passes through Chicago Union Station — making it the natural starting point for transcontinental rail adventures.
| Train | Route | Duration | Key Highlights | Frequency |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Empire Builder | Chicago to Seattle or Portland | ~46h | Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, Glacier National Park | Daily |
| California Zephyr | Chicago to San Francisco | ~51h | Iowa, Nebraska, Colorado Rockies, Nevada, Sierra Nevada | Daily |
| Southwest Chief | Chicago to Los Angeles | ~43h | Kansas, New Mexico high desert, Arizona, Flagstaff | Daily |
| Lake Shore Limited | Chicago to New York or Boston | ~19h | Cleveland, Buffalo, Albany — along Lake Erie | Daily |

| Capitol Limited | Chicago to Washington DC | ~17h | Pittsburgh, Harper's Ferry, Maryland | Daily |
| Texas Eagle | Chicago to San Antonio | ~32h | St Louis, Little Rock, Dallas, Austin | Daily |
| Cardinal | Chicago to New York via Indianapolis | ~28h | Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Charleston WV, Washington DC | 3x weekly |
🌽 Illinois Service — Chicago to St Louis & Beyond
Illinois funds several Amtrak corridor services radiating out of Chicago — collectively called the Illinois Service. These state-supported trains run more frequently than national Amtrak routes and are particularly well-used by business travelers and residents moving between Illinois cities.
The Lincoln Service to St Louis is the busiest — multiple trains daily, journey time around 5 hours 30 minutes, calling at Joliet, Pontiac, Bloomington-Normal, Springfield, and Carlinville. The Illini and Saluki trains serve Carbondale in southern Illinois. The Quincy service heads west toward the Mississippi River.
All Illinois Service trains depart from Chicago Union Station and use relatively modern equipment. Saver fares are genuinely competitive with driving — Chicago to St Louis from $35, Chicago to Bloomington from $22.
🌲 Minnesota — Empire Builder & Regional Routes
Minnesota's rail connections center on the Empire Builder — Amtrak's most scenic and popular long-distance train in the northern USA. Running from Chicago to Seattle and Portland via Minneapolis and St Paul, the Empire Builder passes through some of the most dramatic landscapes in North America, including Glacier National Park in Montana.
For intra-Minnesota travel, the connections are limited. The Empire Builder serves St Cloud, Staples, Detroit Lakes, and Fargo (North Dakota) in addition to the Twin Cities. There is no direct Amtrak service between Duluth and Minneapolis — the North Star commuter rail project connecting them was cancelled, and current travel requires a bus connection or driving.
From Minneapolis, the Empire Builder also provides access to Fargo (North Dakota) in approximately 4 hours 30 minutes — making it a viable option for the Fargo to Minneapolis corridor.
🚗 Michigan Corridor — Chicago to Detroit & Ann Arbor
Michigan is served by Amtrak's Wolverine and Blue Water trains — state-supported corridor services connecting Chicago to Detroit, Ann Arbor, and beyond. The Michigan corridor is one of the more frequently served Amtrak routes in the Midwest, with three daily round trips on the Wolverine and one on the Blue Water.
The route passes through Kalamazoo, Battle Creek, Jackson, and Ann Arbor before reaching Detroit. The Ann Arbor to Chicago leg is particularly popular with University of Michigan students and staff — multiple daily departures make it a practical alternative to driving the I-94.
Michigan has invested significantly in track improvements between Kalamazoo and Dearborn, allowing trains to reach 110 mph on sections of this corridor — faster than most Amtrak routes outside the Northeast.

💡 Booking Tips for Midwest Train Travel
Hiawatha: No Need to Book Far Ahead
With 7 daily departures, the Hiawatha rarely sells out completely. Saver fares ($21) are usually available up to a week before travel. The exception: Friday evening Chicago to Milwaukee and Sunday evening Milwaukee to Chicago — book those a week or more ahead.
Empire Builder: Book Sleeping Car Early
Empire Builder Superliner roomettes for summer departures — especially July and August — sell out 2 to 4 months ahead. If you want to cross Glacier National Park in a private cabin, book as soon as your dates are confirmed. Coach seats are available much later.
Chicago Union Station: Arrive Early
Union Station can be confusing for first-time visitors. The Amtrak departure board is in the Metropolitan Lounge area (lower level) — not in the famous Great Hall. Allow 20 to 30 minutes before departure to find your platform. The Great Hall is worth visiting for its architecture regardless.
Overnight to New York from Chicago
The Lake Shore Limited departs Chicago in the early afternoon and arrives in New York the following morning. Book a Superliner roomette (from ~$200, meals included) for the most comfortable option. The route along Lake Erie through Cleveland and Buffalo is beautiful in daylight hours — try to be awake for that section.
Long Distance Delays are Common
Outside the Hiawatha and Illinois Service (which use tracks with better maintenance agreements), Midwest Amtrak trains are frequently delayed by freight railroad congestion. The Empire Builder in particular runs late regularly on the Montana and North Dakota sections. Build buffer time into any connection plans.
Metra for Chicago Suburbs
For Chicago suburban destinations — Joliet, Aurora, Elgin, Waukegan, Kenosha — Metra commuter rail is far cheaper and more frequent than Amtrak. Metra tickets are bought at station vending machines or the Ventra app. Do not use Amtrak for inner-suburban Chicago travel.
